Celebrate Tiger Awareness Week with Tigers for Tigers!

Happy National Tiger Awareness Week (TAW)! Monday, November 9th, marks the beginning of the annual, student-led initiative aimed at raising awareness about tiger conservation by engaging students with fun activities and fundraisers on tiger mascot campuses across the country.

The idea for Tiger Awareness Week was conceived at our 2nd National Summit at the University of Missouri in the spring of 2014. T4T students worked hard throughout the summer and well into the fall semester to pull off the first Tiger Awareness Week last November. In 2014, students from T4T schools across the country hosted fun events simultaneously on their respective campuses that illustrated the importance of tiger conservation and highlighted their efforts to save our mascot.

Awareness is a critical step in the continuous fight to save our mascot. Each year, thousands of new freshman enroll at our tiger mascot schools ready to embrace their tiger identity that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. However, few of these new students are aware of the plight that faces their wild mascot. Tiger Awareness Week presents a fantastic opportunity to educate students on tiger conservation and promote the great work of each T4T club.

Similar to 2014’s successful TAW, T4T clubs will partner with their university mascot to host a fun skit on their campus to generate mass awareness about T4T and their mascot. For example, some schools will have a poacher chase their mascot through classrooms, dining halls, and other high traffic areas on campus, while encouraging students to use the hashtag #SaveOurMascot on social media, donate to their conservation efforts, or attend an upcoming T4T meeting. These events will take place on Wednesday. Last year Towson decided to film a great promotional video featuring their mascot, Doc. We can’t wait to see what kind of antics the mascots get into this year!

Students will also be fundraising to support The National Tigers for Tigers Coalition’s Pench-Kanha Corridor conservation project in central India. Working together with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the World Wide Fund for Nature-India, we will raise funds to restore habitat within the Pench-Kanha Corridor, home to 120 endangered Bengal tigers, 5% of India’s tigers.

Our goal is to raise $6,500 this week to secure the first square kilometer of land that will be restored to critical tiger habitat. Together, we can #SaveOurMascot.
